When JPG is the right choice

JPG is the format to pick when the pages are photographs or scans, and when size matters more than perfect edges. It is lossy, which is exactly what you want for continuous-tone images: a scanned photograph as JPG is a fraction of the size of the same page as PNG and looks identical.

It is the wrong choice for pages that are mostly text, line art or diagrams. JPEG compression works by discarding detail the eye is unlikely to miss, and sharp black-on-white edges are precisely where that guess goes wrong — you get faint grey haloes around letters, most visible at small sizes.

Transparency does not survive

JPEG has no alpha channel. A PDF page with a transparent background comes out with that background filled, not preserved, which is almost never a problem because PDF pages are normally opaque anyway.
